Bariatric trauma patients present unique assessment, treatment, and transport challenges. Body habitus may affect airway management, ventilation, patient movement, equipment selection, and overall care. 

While the principles of trauma care remain the same, providers should recognize factors that may complicate assessment and treatment in bariatric patients.

Important bariatric trauma considerations include:

• Airway management may be more challenging.
• Ventilation and oxygenation may be more difficult.
• Assessment findings may be harder to identify.
• Patient movement and packaging may require additional resources.
• Equipment limitations should be considered.
• Extrication and transport may be more complex.
• Additional personnel may be required for safe patient handling.

Focus on maintaining airway, breathing, circulation, and patient safety while utilizing available resources to support effective care.

Early recognition of resource needs, transportation requirements, and equipment limitations improves patient outcomes and reduces safety risks for both patients and providers. 

Remember: The trauma assessment process does not change. Adapt your equipment, resources, and approach to meet the patient’s needs.
