Scene safety is the first priority of every trauma response. Before patient contact, providers must evaluate the environment for hazards that could place themselves, their team, bystanders,or the patient at additional risk.

Trauma scenes are often dynamic and unpredictable. Hazards may include traffic, unstable vehicles, weapons, fire, hazardous materials, environmental conditions, or violent individuals. Providers must continuously assess the scene and recognize that conditions can change rapidly.

Effective scene management requires situational awareness, risk assessment, and appropriate use of available resources. Additional responders, law enforcement, fire personnel, or specialized rescue assets may be necessary to ensure a safe and effective response.

Remember: a safe provider is an effective provider. Scene safety must be established and maintained before patient care can begin.
