Trauma is a time-sensitive emergency. Patient outcomes are often determined within the first minutes following injury, making rapid assessment and early intervention critical.

The PHTLS approach is built around a systematic, prioritized assessment process — not a checklist completed in order, but a framework for identifying and treating the most life-threatening problems first. This means addressing what will kill the patient fastest before moving on to less immediate concerns.

Effective trauma management requires more than recognizing that an injury exists. Providers must be able to prioritize treatment decisions, perform interventions efficiently, and continuously reassess as patient condition changes.

As you move through this course, focus on building that prioritization mindset: assess systematically, treat the greatest threat first, and reassess often. This approach forms the foundation for every module that follows.
